Monika Johnson-Hostler has big fundraising lead in Wake County school board contest

Wake County school candidate Monika Johnson-Hostler has well over a two-to-one fundraising lead over competitor Matt Scruggs in the District 2 contest.

According to Johnson-Hostler’s latest campaign finance report, she reported raising $18,225 and spending $11,441.80 through Sept. 23. According to Scruggs’ latest campaign finance report, he reported raising $7,660 and spending $4,576.20.

Johnson-Hostler’s biggest donors in the latest report are the $4,000 from the Wake Citizens For Good Government and the $1,000 from former National Education Association executive director John Wilson.

Johnson-Hostler’s other donors in the new report include school board members Susan Evans, Christine Kushner and Jim Martin. The Democrat also got donations from Great Schools in Wake Coalition members Sharon Eckard and Lettice Rhodes.

Johnson-Hostler also reported donations from former Garner Mayor Sam Bridges, Garner Councilman Ken Marshburn, the Democratic Women of Wake County. State Rep. Rosa Gill, state Rep. Darren Jackson, Raleigh Councilwoman Mary-Ann Baldwin and former state Rep. Linda Coleman.

Overall, the biggest donors for Johnson-Hostler are the $4,000 from the Wake Citizens For Good Government, the $2,500 from Ann Campbell, the $1,000 from state Department of Public Instruction specialist Tracy Brown and the $1,000 from John Wilson.

Johnson-Hostler gave $6,431.94 to political strategist Perry Woods.

Both the biggest donors in Scruggs’ latest report and the campaign overall were the $1,100 he got from conservative activist Donna Yowell, the $1,000 from the East Wake Republican Club and the $889.89 from his father, Meredith Scruggs.

Other donors for Scruggs in the latest report include fellow Republican school board candidate Don McIntyre, Cary Town Councilman Don Frantz, County Commissioner Tony Gurley, state Sen. Neal Hunt, the Southern Wake Republican Club, state Rep. Paul Stam’s campaign committee, state Sen. Chad Barefoot’s campaign committee and the Greater Garner Republican Club.
